They quickly changed the mindset and inserted themselves in the first trade of the night. Dallas traded their fifth seed to the Atlanta Hawks along with a future first-round pick protected to sweeten the deal for the third seed. This transaction eventually led the Mavericks to acquire their prospect with potential to change the franchise for years to come, Luka Doncic.

Teams were precarious to go all in on Oklahoma star Trae Young just for the sole reason that his overall game lacked defensive abilities. Doncic, on the other hand, has a little bit of everything to offer. He has tremendous upside with his incredible playmaking skills. For a young player of that age to have his court vision combined with a knack for shot-creating as a guard is something rare. Luka Doncic is the clear favorite for our panelists, but who do you think will be this season's ROY?

The roster the Mavericks currently have all possess key role players that can blend their attributes for success. Add Luka in there and they now have something worth a look.

The Mavs missed the playoffs for only the second time in the past 17 seasons and used its lottery pick to select point guard Dennis Smith Jr. The Mavs had dual goals last summer: attempt to acquire players who can be part of the franchise's foundation after Dirk Nowitzki 's eventual retirement, but try to build a team that gives Nowitzki a chance to compete in the playoffs during his final seasons.

A slow start, which occurred in part due to an Achilles tendon injury that sidelined Nowitzki for most of the first two months of the season, contributed to the Mavs' midseason decision to emphasize the youth movement. Dallas parted with two stopgap veterans at the trade deadline, waiving point guard Deron Williams and dumping center Andrew Bogut in a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers that brought center Nerlens Noel to Dallas.

They intend to re-sign Noel, a restricted free agent who hopes to drive up his price by receiving an offer sheet from another team. The Mavs consider year-old Harrison Barnes , year-old Noel and year-old Smith three potential cornerstones as they begin their rebuilding process.

Teams such as the Trail Blazers may even be interested in a big star-studded deal to shake up their rosters, perhaps a CJ McCollum for Kristaps Porzingis trade would be an intriguing prospect for both teams. If McCollum is not something the Mavericks are interested in, there are a number of sharpshooting and consistent scoring role players around the NBA that they should attempt to poach. The Mavericks other main focus in the offseason will be finding a new head coach to try and take them to the promised land, with the current NBA environment leaving a number of coaches looking for positions.

The Mavs could choose to stick with who they know and promote Assistant Coach Jamahl Mosley, which would satisfy Doncic who reportedly endorses Mosley as a future head coach. However, other intriguing prospects include Jason Kidd, Becky Hammon, and Chauncy Billups, all of who provide a fresh set of eyes and have been doing great things in the assistant coach position at their respective clubs.

Cuban and the Mavericks organization will not rush the move, being certain to ensure the person for the job is the right fit for Doncic and the roster they hope to develop. Dallas sits in an unusual spot, as the playoffs continue to push on without their presence.

They could choose to try and continue the push for immediate success by trading Porzingis for another star talent. While it is unclear what route the Mavericks will take, this roster looks unlikely to survive until next season, with a major restructure and potential rebuild likely to occur around Doncic. Whether it all pans out remains to be seen, however, Dallas needs to do something to change their fortunes.
